Mrs S. McConnell

By the death this week of, Mrs S. McConnell, the Fairlie district has lost one of its best known and widely respected residents.

Mrs McConnell, who was born In Tapanui, came to Fairlie as a small child with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Black, in 1899.

After her marriage to Mr W. R. McConnell they took up farming at Burkes Pass and, in later years, Mr McConnell, who predeceased his wife four years ago, was manager of the Allandale station.

Mrs McConnell gave good service to many organisations in the district. She was one of the earliest members of the Allandale Women's Institute and was awarded a good service badge for her work.

Mrs McConnell took a keen Interest in the Women's Division of Federated Farmers, being a foundation member. She was made a life member several years ago.

She was also a member of the Fairlie Red Cross Committee and: the Mackenzie Historical Society.

Mrs McConnell is survived by a family of three sons and three daughters—Messrs J. R. McConnell (Fairlie), W. B. McConnell (Springburn), R. N. McConnell (Te Araroa), and Mesdames A. V. O'Brien (Hokitika), I. H. Wardell (Lake Pukaki), J. W. Pearce (Hinds).

The funeral was one of the largest seen in Fairlie, there being a cortege of more than 60 cars, and was representative of the whole community.

The service at St Columba Presbyterian Church and at the graveside was conducted by Rev. A. S. M. Munro.

The sons and sons-in-law acted as pall bearers.
